Evelyn Shoemaker

Evelyn Shoemaker, 97 years of age, of Peebles, Ohio, passed away on Sunday, May 24th, 2026, at the Adams County Regional Medical Center surrounded by her family. Evelyn was born the third of eight children, on December 25th, 1928, to the late John and Anna DeAtley. Evelyn's joyous laughter fluttered over the intercom and brightened the halls of Peebles High School for 25 years. She retired from her school secretary work in 1994. For the past 32 years she embraced her time with family and friends. Seen as a pillar of the community as well as a lifetime member of the Peebles Church of Christ, Evelyn was a deeply devoted lady. She was a timeless soul filled with grace and poise. Along with her parents, Evelyn is proceeded in death first and foremost, by her husband of 70 years, Theron Shoemaker. As well as her beautiful granddaughter Kara Shearer and her siblings Geraldine (Harry) Johnson, Christine (Charles) Brewer, Grace (Dean) Thompson, Deloris (Gordon) Weiler, Judy (Orin) Call, Susan (Skip) Willoughby, and her sisters-in-law Louise DeAtley and Alice Mae (Hubert) Grooms, and a brother-in-law Richard Shoemaker. Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Valerie (Richard) Swayne, and her son, Phillip (Carma) Shoemaker, both of Peebles. Along with her brother, John DeAtley Jr and a sister-in-law, Patricia Shoemaker. She will be dearly missed by her grandchildren, Deborah (Francesca Salvatini) Swayne, Benjamin (Krystal) Shoemaker, Whitney (Wes) Newman, her great grandchildren, Jon Michael Shoemaker, Isabella Shoemaker, Brantley Shoemaker, Walker Newman, Wylie Newman, Marcus Shearer, Malachi Shearer, many nieces and nephews and special family friends. Evelyn also held a special place in her heart for George (Stephanie) McCoy. Family and friends may pay their respects during visitation on Saturday, May 30, 2026, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, at the Peebles Church of Christ. Funeral services will be held immediately following visitation, on Saturday, May 30, 2026, beginning at 1:00 pm, at the Peebles Church of Christ with Jason Bohl officiating. Evelyn's burial will follow at the Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that memorial donations be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund at the University of Cincinnati Cancer Center.
